Joint Pain Q & A

What is Joint Pain?

Just as the name implies, joint pain means pain in the body’s joints. When the cartilage wears away over time or is displaced for any other reason, the joints can no longer move smoothly because the joint is directly in contact with other bone. This bone-on-bone contact is focused in the area around the joint and it can be intensely painful.

Why Does Joint Pain Happen?

This can be different for each person, and the cause of joint pain is not always clear. Many people who suffer from osteoarthritis have severe joint pain at some point. Since osteoarthritis is seen more often in older people, the risk of having joint pain does increase with age. Joint pain may also happen in people who are overweight or obese. Excess weight places considerable pressure and stress on the joints, in particular areas like the knee joints. In some people, joint pain is genetic in origin. Lack of estrogen during menopause leads to joint pain through calcium depletion and decreased bone density. Poor nutrition may also contribute to joint pain.

What Are the Symptoms of Joint Pain?

Joint pain sometimes includes not only pain in the area just under the joint but also a popping noise during movements. Many people who have joint pain also experience significant stiffness. In some cases, the skin may feel warm to the touch in the joint area as well. Some people will have swelling at the joint site.

How is Joint Pain Treated?

There are a number of ways that joint pain can be treated successfully today. The pain relief route taken will depend on several factors, including current medication, the degree of the pain, and whether there are any additional medical conditions that may be contributing to the joint pain. Joint pain sufferers can create moist heat compresses or ice packs for pain relief at home, but joint pain that doesn’t go away may require another type of treatment. There are also a number of highly effective prescription medications that can help with joint pain relief today.
