Parkinson's disease is a nervous system disease that causes tremors, muscle rigidity, and movement problems. It is a progressive disease that worsens over time.
The cause of Parkinson's disease is not known. It occurs when neurons within the brain begin to malfunction and die. The particular neurons that are impacted are those that create dopamine. This is significant because dopamine is the neurotransmitter that relays messages to the portion of the brain that is in control of movement. With the level of dopamine progressively decreasing, Parkinson's disease patients are not able to control their movements like they once were.
Older people are at higher risk for Parkinson's disease, although the disease is occasionally found in young adults. Men are more likely to suffer from Parkinson's disease than women are. There may be a genetic factor in the development of Parkinson's disease. If a close relative has it, a person's chances of developing Parkinson's disease are slightly increased. Hormone depletion may also be a risk factor. Postmenopausal women or women who have undergone a hysterectomy without having hormone replacement therapy appear to have an increased risk for Parkinson's. It is possible that people with past head trauma may have an increased risk of Parkinson's disease as well.
While there is currently no cure for Parkinson's disease, the symptoms can be treated very effectively with the help of an experienced neurologist. Because the symptoms can vary, identifying these symptoms clearly is a key part of treatment. Each symptom can be addressed individually if needed. For example, some Parkinson's disease patients may suffer from depression, so an antidepressant is often useful. There are many FDA-approved medications that have been helpful for some Parkinson's disease patients. For those whose disease can't be adequately controlled with medications and lifestyle changes, there are also surgical procedures that may be able to help.
