Neuropathy refers to a group of disorders stemming from peripheral nervous system damage. This is the system responsible for relaying information from the central nervous system to the remainder of the body. When the peripheral nerves sustain damage or are destroyed, it can cause some severe symptoms. Neuropathy may be sporadic, and it often grows slowly over a period of years.
Diabetic neuropathy accounts for half of all neuropathies. Diabetes sufferers who have diabetic neuropathy frequently have damaged nerves in their legs and feet. It is very common to have numbness in the feet and toes. People with diabetic neuropathy may suffer from foot wounds and not even realize it due to the numbness. This may lead to sores and ulcerations if diabetic patients are not vigilant about foot care. Diabetic neuropathy can also cause digestive system issues, urinary issues, and even heart problems. The symptoms of diabetic neuropathy can range from quite mild to extremely serious or even fatal.
Neuropathy is part of another disease or condition in many cases, just as it is with diabetic neuropathy. Autoimmune disease and hereditary disorders may both cause neuropathy. Medications used to treat illnesses such as HIV/AIDS may also cause neuropathy to develop. There are also cases in which the case for the neuropathy simply can't be immediately determined.
The treatment for neuropathy will often start with symptom relief. Pain relievers, both nonprescription and prescription may be used. Some medications, especially those normally used as seizure medications, may provide nerve pain relief. Topical creams and solutions, especially those containing Capsaicin, may help with nerve pain as well. Some antidepressants may also be useful in the management of neuropathy pain. In some cases, the neuropathy pain is so severe that the above treatments are not effective. In this situation, a surgical procedure can relieve the nerve pressure causing the pain.
