Multiple Sclerosis, commonly called MS, is a disease in which the sufferer's immune system launches attacks on the body. These attacks cause serious damage to the outer nerve sheaths and to the nerves in the brain and the spinal cord.
People of any age can suffer from MS, but it is most commonly diagnosed in older teens and adults between the ages of 15 and 50. Females are more likely than males to have relapsing MS, but with primary-progressive MS, men and women suffer in equal amounts.
The symptoms of MS can vary from one person to another. Feelings of numbness, changes in vision, vertigo, bladder issues, chronic weakness, depression, and memory problems may all be common symptoms. MS symptoms are not always present, however. In most patients, symptoms will be pronounced for a period (a flare-up) and will then dissipate for a while. This cycle generally continues with regular flare-ups.
The cause of MS is not certain at this time. Many leading researchers believe that multiple factors may contribute to MS. For example, it is possible that MS is caused by a virus combined with a genetic predisposition to MS. While MS is not inherited, a number of families do have more than one family member who suffers from MS. This means that there is some genetic role, although the degree of that role is unknown. There are also several other factors that researchers think may contribute to MS. These include vitamin D deficiency, dietary intake of fat, and cigarette smoking.
Treatment is customized for every patient. There are a number of FDA-approved medications that may be useful in the treatment of MS. These medications, while not a cure, can significantly reduce flare-ups and may even slow the progression of the disease. A neurologist can also recommend lifestyle changes that can help a patient stay healthy and avoid flare-ups as much as possible.
