Movement Disorder Q & A

What Are Movement Disorders?

Movement disorders are conditions that negatively impact the ability to move quickly, smoothly, and easily. There are a number of different movement disorders. These include: Ataxia, dystonia, Parkinson’s disease, Huntington’s disease, Tourette syndrome, Shy-Drager syndrome, Wilson disease, restless legs syndrome, facial tics, myoclonus, and many others. The movement problems may range widely. For example, in ataxia, the problem is often jerky and sudden movements, while Parkinson’s disease patients may deal primarily with tremors.

How Are Movement Disorders Diagnosed?

Movement disorders are diagnosed by a neurologist. The neurologist will often recommend a complete neurological evaluation. This evaluation may take several hours, depending on the exact problems that the patient is having. The evaluation will reveal which areas that the patient needs help with, and the neurologist can often make a specific diagnosis after this in-depth evaluation. The patient will need to demonstrate movements of all types during the evaluation, so it is best for the patient to be as well rested as possible for the testing process.

Why Do Movement Disorders Develop?

The reason for the development of movement disorders is not always known. Some diseases, for example, Parkinson’s disease, have unknown origins. While certain groups of people may be at higher risk for Parkinson’s disease, there is not a clear cause at this time. In other movement disorders, for example, Tourette syndrome, the patient often inherits the disorder from a parent.

How Are Movement Disorders Treated?

The treatment for movement disorders depends on the specific disorder and on the patient’s current symptoms. Medications are often a major part of controlling symptoms, as there are FDA-approved medications for many different movement disorders. Many patients also benefit considerably from lifestyle modifications. The neurologist can recommend changes in lifestyle, diet, and activity that can help minimize symptoms in many cases.
