Most people have headaches at some point during their lives. The pain in the head (and sometimes neck) area will resolve on its own in some cases, but in other situations, the head pain is only the start of the problem. People who have severe headaches, including migraine headaches, may have symptoms like vomiting, nausea, vision changes, light sensitivity, sensitivity to smells, and many other unpleasant symptoms. For people who suffer from severe symptoms like these, or for people who routinely have 2 or more headaches per week, it is important to see a neurologist who can both diagnose and treat the headaches.
The neurologist will be best able to help with headaches when the patient provides as much detailed information as possible. Patients should make note of the exact time and day that each a headache happens. If anything causes the headache to worsen (for example a certain smell,) make note of that as well. It is also important to note any vision changes that accompany the headache or that happen just prior to the onset of the headache. This often includes things like blurry vision, black spots, lines, or changes in light. Food and drink can play a role in headaches, so patients should keep a journal of their food and beverage intake. Anything consumed in the 24-hour period leading up to the headache may be significant. The neurologist will also need to know about the headache remedies that have been used in the past, and how effective each of these remedies was.
Headache treatment is very much a custom process. Some patients find relief from prescription medication. There are both preventive and as-needed varieties available. Lifestyle changes are often very helpful, as well. The neurologist can pinpoint the cause of the headaches as closely as possible, which will allow the patient to make the necessary changes to avoid at least some of the headaches.
