EEG, an Electroencephalogram, is a type of test used to identify irregularities in electrical brain activity. This test observes basic wave form as well as the brain's reaction to specific stimuli like bright lights.
If any type of brain disorder is suspected, an EEG is often ordered as a diagnostic tool. For example, in epileptic patients, seizures will be revealed as quick spikes on EEG printouts. For people suffering from brain lesions resulting from strokes, there may be very slow EEG waves seen in test results. When conditions such as Alzheimer's disease, narcolepsy, or some types of psychosis are suspected, an EEG test can be a valuable diagnostic test. EEG tests are sometimes used to measure brain activity as well. For example, in patients who suffered trauma to the head, the EEG can reveal whether there was any brain damage.
Before the EEG test, the neurologist will provide the patient with a list of preparation guidelines. It is important that patients discuss all current medications with their doctor before having an EEG test, as some medications may need to be stopped prior to the test. Patients are generally asked to stop all caffeine intake at least 8 hours prior to the EEG. The doctor may give specific guidelines on the amount of sleep needed before an EEG. Some EEG testing is done while the patient is asleep, so the sleep schedule may need to be altered for that reason. Patients can typically eat and drink normally before an EEG. It is important to be sure that the body is properly nourished, as low blood sugar could potentially skew the EEG results. The neurologist may give patients other specific guidelines, and it is important to follow these closely so that the most accurate results can be achieved.
